On April 26, The People of Tanzania celebrate the 54th anniversary of the United Republic of Tanzania. To mark the occasion, the Tanzanian Ambassador to the United States, Wilson Mutagaywa Masilingi, offered a reception on Thursday evening at Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC.

Diplomats from several countries, including Kerfalla Yansane of Guinea and Serge Mombouli of the Republic of Congo and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps, attended the ceremony.

The Republic of Tanzania became independent from Britain in 1960. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. That alliance has largely been kept as the country enjoys « peace and prosperity », noted Ambassador Masilingi in his prepared remarks. He went on to provide an overview of Tanzania, a country of 45 million people, a multi-party democracy, with a land area larger that Nigeria.

Tourism, Masilingi said, is an important revenue earner of Tanzania. There are 16 national parks including the well known Serengeti Game Park, Tanzania’s biggest draw for tourists, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, Lake Victoria, and many others. AlloAfricaNews
